2015 Highland Gathering, Boonah Qld

The first highland gathering held in Boonah, Queensland, since 1929 took place on 30 May. Earlier gatherings were hold in 1906, 1909, 1914 and 1929, attracting up to 10,000 people from all over southern Queensland to this small town about 90 kilometres south-west of Brisbane. The area was settled by Scottish families in the mid-1800s after the region was opened to settlers, and several cattle stations were established - and later broken up into dairy and crop farms.

This gathering was held in conjunction with the Clydesdale Spectacular, an annual event in Boonah. The Clydesdale breed originated in Scotland, so the combined event was appropriate. One of the judged classses was for clans - a clan banner followed by a piper and clan representatives, all led into the arena by a Clydesdale wearing a sash in the clan tartan. Our Elliot clan banner is shown below, held by Judy Hodgkinson (nee Elliot), with the Clydesdale behind them.

A full day's program of events for the gathering included highland dancing, pipe bands, Scottish food, and demonstrations such as the history of the bagpipes, setting up a pipe band, and different forms of dancing. The event ended with a dinner and ceilidh.

The organisers hope to make the highland gathering an annual event now, increasing it to two days and possibly longer, as it was seen to be very a successful trial.

The story draws heavily on the Clan system in Scotland in a very turbulent period in The Borders. It includes both contemporary and historical information which will interest those who enjoy supernatural or historical or thriller genres.

David Elliot is 57, frustrated, out of work and has three failed marriages behind him. In 2007 he goes to the Borders of Scotland hoping that his ancestry will help him find some validation of his life. Accompanied by his daughter, son-in-law and his grandson Thomas, he finds that his bloodline leads his family into terrifying danger. 700 years of history threaten those he holds dearest, as myth and reality of “The Bloodiest Valley in Britain” combine.

The corruption of the rich and powerful meets legend as Good and Evil clash over the ancient Throne of Scotland and power in the modern world. William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, Border Reivers, creatures of supernatural horror and past heroes of the Elliot Clan are all involved, as the evil Lord William de Soulis actions his plan to assume power over an unsuspecting world.

All that stands against him is a family fighting desperately to protect a child. Their only weapon is their love of family… the power of their Clan.
